Note: Members of HI-USA ride or walk free and others pay $3.00 unless otherwise noted.

Always bring water, tube, and money, and rides will be cancelled in hard rain, snow or < 35° F.

Self-sufficiency required means that you can change your own tire and have enough money that you could telephone for help.

Speed is not the average speed for the whole trip, it is the speed that the main group will stay at for any significant time, based on flat terrain and no wind.

Gateway Council Hostelling International requires helmets meeting or exceeding ANSI or Snell standards on all bike rides.

Sign in at 8:45 AM for a 9:00 start unless different start time is shown for all Tuesday and Thursday Turtle/Turbo rides.

Carry your HI card with you on your bike, on a walk, when canoeing or on other HI sign-in events. Often there is an additional fee if you are not a member. Spot checking started July 15, 2007.

19 Aug Tue Turtles (3Ba) and Turbos (3Bb) Howell Island No Big Hills West Loop. Meet at the Windsor Crossing Church at 114 N. Eatherton Road which is 0.8 miles south of the Howell Island Conservation Area parking lot. Turtles ride 21 miles of rolling West County hills while Turbo options can extend ride to 33 miles. Directions: I-40/64 west of I-270 about 9 miles, Long Rd. exit veers left, R-Chesterfield Airport Rd, L-Olive Street (Phillip 66 Station) which becomes North Eatherton Road. Drive about 2.75 miles to Windsor Church on the left at the “Landings at Spirit Golf Club” sign. Coordinator: Susan Feldman, 314-822-3655.

When you get to Columbia, look for electric traffic signal and McDonald’s where Edelweiss Dr. and Parkview Dr. meet on opposite sides of IL Rte. 3. Take Edelweiss to get to MarketPlace parking lot. 2 Sept Tue Turtles (3Aa) and Turbos (3Ab) Kent’s Creve Coeur Lake–West St. Charles County Ride. New ride to somewhere other than New Town and Kilroy’s! Meet at Sailboat Cove on Creve Coeur Lake for an easy spin out into West St. Charles County. Directions: From I-270, exit at Dorsett Rd. We will make our way over the new bridge into Granite City and to the lovely Wilson Park. 11 Sep Thu Turtles Destination - Delmar Loop (2Ba). The meeting place for this ride is in Forest Park in the lot in the front of the administration building, as usual, at 9 for 9:30. We will make out way to Stacy Park, mostly uphill and then mostly downhill back to the Delmar Loop for any one of a number of delicious eateries. Leader: Carol Tosie, 314-845-0320.

11 Sep Thu Waterloo – Red Bud (4BB). Depart at 9:00 a.m. from the Wal-Mart parking lot in Waterloo, Illinois for a 46 mile ride to Red Bud. Directions: I-270/255 SE across the JB Bridge, exit Columbia/Hwy 3 south for 9.3 miles to Hwy HH (Denny’s Restaurant), right on Hwy HH for 1 block, left into the Wal-Mart parking lot. Or, for 10 additional miles prior to the start in Waterloo (and also 10 additional miles after return to Waterloo), depart at 8:00 a.m. from the MarketPlace in Columbia, Illinois. Directions: I-270/255 SE across the JB Bridge, exit Columbia/Hwy 3 south for 1.9 miles, right at Edelweiss Drive (McDonalds) for two blocks, left into the MarketPlace. Rest/Food Stop in Red Bud. 16 Sept Tue Turtles (3Ba) and Turbos (3-4Bb) Three Ferries Loop. Meet at the St. Charles/Mueller Rd. Soccer Fields. Directions: From I-270 take MO 370 west past Hwy 94. Leave Rte.370 at Elm St./New Town exit, north on Elm/New Town for ˝ mile and turn right on Mueller Rd. to soccer fields parking lot on right. Park near restrooms. Join us to see two states, two rivers, three counties, via three ferries (Grafton, Brussels and Golden Eagle)! Plus (optional) side trips to Pere Marquette State Park and/or Brussels for options of 33, 39, 41, or 47 miles. There will be small additional fees of $3.00 for two of the ferry rides. 18 Sep Thu Turtles Try the Other Schlafly's (2Ba). Can't play favorites, have to be fair to both venues. So today, we are meeting at the usual time at the Ethical Society on 9001 Clayton (it's early so there will be traffic) and hopefully find a nice safe way to get to Maplewood to the Other Schlafly's. 23 Sept Tue Turtles (3Aa) and Turbos (4Ab) Lewis & Clark Boathouse to St. Peters. Meet in St Charles at the Lewis and Clark Boathouse parking lot. For more miles take the Turbo option out to O’Fallon. Directions: I-70 west into St. Charles, exit 5th street north, right on Boonslick to Boathouse parking area. 25 Sep Thu Turtles Conquer Clayton (2Ba). We are meeting today in Forest Park in the lot in front of the administration building at 9 for 9:30, We have a new leader and a new route which she assures me will be worth the drive into the city. 25 Sept Thu West Alton – Smartt Airport (4Ab). Depart @ 0900 from behind the Pit Stop service at the intersection of Hwy 94 and 367. This is a flat and likely breezy 46 miles with lunch @ Kilroys. Leader: John Buck, 314 878-3962.

28 Sep Sun BABES Hidden Lake Winery Ride (2Ab-3Bc): Join the Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society as we explore the flat to slightly rolling countryside near the Hidden Lake Winery near Aviston, Ill. Three or four routes 15-35+ miles. 11 a.m. departure for longer route, noon departure for the shorter routes. After the ride, enjoy wine and the relaxing atmosphere at Hidden Lake. You may bring food to the winery, but you cannot bring in beverages not purchased from the winery. From Missouri, take 40/I-64 East, to I-64 East (exit 2), to Albers Road (exit 34), turn left on Aviston/Albers Road, go through the town of Albers, turn left on Highline Road, then turn left on Wellen Road. 2 Oct Thu Turtles Sweep Through Spanish Lake (2Ba). This ride goes through north county from the Chain of Rocks bridge to Fort Bellefontaine and through Spanish Lake Park on their bike path. A serious cyclist could get 10 extra miles by going into the confluence park area and back out also. It is a serious ride for turtles and turbos alike. We will meet at the commuter lot on Lilac and 270 at 9 for 9:30. Food could be at Ponticellos or Cristo's, both old and venerated establishments. Leader: Jerry Kohler, 314-739-8611.

2 Oct Thu Lake St Louis to Points North (3Cb). Meet @ the parking area near the north side exit ramp from I 70 at Lake St Louis. Depart at 0900 to the east then left on Hoff Rd, Flatwoods etc to Wentzville & return. One or two short challenging hills. John Buck, 314 878-3962.

7 Oct Tue Turtles (3Ba) and Turbos (3Bb) Grant’s Trail-Jefferson Barracks-Carondelet-Kirkwood Loop. Meet at the Kirkwood Community Center. This ride will start on the extended Grant’s Trail, pass through historic Jefferson Barracks, then into the city to Carondelet Park and on to Kirkwood for a lunch stop. Directions: I-270 to Manchester Rd. East on Manchester for about 2 miles to Geyer Rd. South on Geyer for 1.2 miles to Kirkwood Park/Community Center, park behind the pool. 9 Oct Thu Turtles Saunter Through St. Charles (2Ba). Meet us at Creve Coeur Park, Sailboat Cove at 9 for 9:30 for a leisurely ride into St. Charles and New Town. May the wind be with us! 11-18 Oct Ozark Trail Backpacking Trip. Join us for our 20 year celebration of promoting the Ozark Trail through our backpacking adventure. You can backpack for a half or full week. We will be on the Current River and Between the Rivers sections. The Current River section is one of the most scenic sections of the trail. Three outstanding destinations are Klepzig Mill, Rocky Falls and Stegall Mountain. See article at www.moonlightramble.com for full details.

14 Oct Tue Turtles (3Aa) and Turbos (3Ab) Portage Des Sioux Ride. Meet at the soccer fields on Mueller Rd. in St. Charles, MO. Flat 38-mile ride (with shorter options) to the village of Portage des Sioux. We will visit Our Lady of the River Shrine and have lunch at Kilroy's Restaurant at the St. Charles Airport on the way back. Take I-370 west across the Missouri River into St. Charles Co. Exit at Elm St./New Town and turn right. Go about ˝ mile and turn right again on Mueller Rd. Soccer fields will be on your right. Park near the restroom building. 16 Oct Thu Turtles Tackle The Hill (2Ba). We will be meeting at Forest Park in the lot in front of the Administration Building at 9 for 9:30. We will be taking a route into downtown, south to Jefferson Barracks and then over to the Hill for legendary Adriana's food (or if you want to rile our leader, try Guido's across the street or Amighetti's). 8 Dec Mon Executive Committee Meeting, 6:30p.m. Agenda includes wrap up of 2008 finances and strategic planning directives for 2009.

24 Dec Wed Come Christmas caroling on the oldest continuous route of the Christmas Carols Association (since the late 1930’s). This is possibly one of the oldest events supported by HI members. Meet at 6:30p.m. (depart at 7:00p.m.) on Christmas Eve in the lobby of the West End City Apartments (formerly the Congress and Senate Apartments), corner of Pershing Ave. and Union Blvd. We walk one block to the large mansions of Waterman Terrace and sing for one block, both sides. We sometimes get invited in for cookies or snacks. Dress warmly and/or festively. We provide song sheets. You don’t have to know how to sing—-the rest of us don’t either. No go only under extreme conditions like a blizzard or 20 degrees below zero—-otherwise singing in the cold and snow is fun and part of the season.
